Behind The Art: Willy Wonka
Behind The Art: Willy Wonka
Gene Wilder, childhood wonder, classic comedy, and creativity that builds worlds.
Gene Wilder is one of my favorite people to watch on screen.
Before I even get to Willy Wonka, I think about Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor together. Those two made some of the most classic comedy moments in the world. The timing, the nervous energy, the faces, the chaos, the friendship, the way they played off each other — it was genius.
In Silver Streak, that scene where Gene disguises himself while Richard Pryor coaches him through it still has me weak. Gene has his face covered with black shoe polish, sunglasses on, a hat on, trying to evade the police with Richard Pryor walking him through it. Hysterical.
Then you have Stir Crazy, where Pryor teaches him how to act tough before prison. Gene starts flailing around trying to be bad, then hits that “That’s right, we bad” energy and leaves me on the floor rolling every time.
That is what I love about Gene Wilder. He could be funny, strange, nervous, brilliant, innocent, unpredictable, and unforgettable all at the same time. That is exactly why Willy Wonka worked.
Willy Wonka is one of those movies that stays with you for life. Magical, colorful, weird, and a little dark. It had mystery, danger, imagination, and a world that felt like somebody’s wildest dream came to life.
The colors of that movie are as memorable to me as Charlie winning the factory. The candy, the rooms, the costumes, the weirdness, the shadows, the humor, the music, and that feeling that anything could happen once you stepped inside that world.
When I painted Willy Wonka, I wanted the piece to carry that same feeling. Color. Weirdness. Magic. Darkness. Imagination. Not just a clean portrait, but a little bit of that strange creative universe Gene Wilder made unforgettable.
Wonka was not just a candy man. He was a creator of worlds.
This painting is a tribute to Gene Wilder, childhood wonder, classic comedy, and creativity that stays with you long after the movie is over.
