Behind The Art: Selena
Behind The Art
Selena
Living in Southern California, you have to know who Selena is.
Selena was more than a singer. She was talent, beauty, joy, family, work ethic, culture, and light. She made people extremely happy, and that kind of impact matters to me.
I was watching the movie about her life when the story started hitting me different. The doubts, the setbacks, the family, the pressure, the dream, the work — I understood parts of that. Her story connected to the story I was working on in my own life. No matter what came against her, it was always about the art. It was always about the music. It was always about giving people something they could feel.
The phrase “The show must go on” stayed with me.
That is something I understand as an artist and entertainer. You can have doubts. You can have setbacks. You can have people not understand the vision yet. But if the gift is real, you keep showing up. You keep creating. You keep giving people the best of what you have.
With this painting, I wanted people to remember how much talent Selena had and how incredible her impact was. She had a presence that still feels alive. Her music, her style, her smile, and her story continue to reach people across generations.
Like many of my paintings, this piece is a tribute. Not just to the image of Selena, but to everything she represented — joy, dedication, family, culture, resilience, and the power of art to make people feel connected.
Selena made people happy. That kind of impact is one of my goals with my art too.
