Behind The Art: Lebron

Greatness, pressure, history, and a painting that changed in real time.

The Lebron painting changed while I was painting it.

When I started the piece, Lebron was still tied to Cleveland in my mind. That was the chapter I was painting. The Cavaliers. The pressure. The city. The history. The kid from Akron who had carried expectation since he was young and turned it into one of the greatest basketball careers we have ever seen.

Then, while the painting was almost finished, the news hit.

Lebron was making the move from the Cavaliers to the Lakers.

That changed everything. The colors, the feeling, the story, and the whole energy of the piece. I could have left it alone, but that did not feel right. The moment had shifted, so the painting had to shift with it.

I had to repaint it in Lakers colors.

Once the purple and gold came in, the piece became more than a portrait of one of the greatest basketball players ever. It became a snapshot of a major sports moment happening in real time.

I love when a painting catches history while it is still moving. That does not happen every time. Sometimes you paint a person after the story has already settled. But with this one, the story was changing while the paint was still fresh.

Lebron represents greatness, pressure, discipline, leadership, endurance, and the ability to keep evolving while the whole world watches every move. That is not easy. Everybody sees the highlights, but not everybody understands the weight that comes with staying at the top that long.

This piece reminds me that art can catch a moment before it becomes history.

I started painting one chapter. By the time I finished, Lebron was in purple and gold.
