Behind The Art: Dr. Disrespect
Behind The Art: Dr. Disrespect
Character, branding, performance, timing, and building something unforgettable.
Dr. Disrespect is one of one.
Before he completely blew up, Jeremy Worst and I met Doc at TwitchCon the year before everything went through the roof for him. He was cool to both of us, and that always stuck with me.
What I admire about Doc is how he took something familiar and made it different. Streaming, gaming, and entertainment already existed, but he created a whole persona, sold it to tens of thousands of people, and built a fortune doing it his way.
Following your passion is one thing. But making it familiar enough for people to understand, different enough to remember, and strong enough to make a living from is something else.
That is branding. That is performance. That is timing. That is character.
When I was setting up my booth at TwitchCon the year Doc went through the roof, his manager saw my prints and thought I had taken a photo of Doc to sell. Then I showed him the actual painting hanging behind me.
He loved it. Then Doc came over and loved it too.
Because I entered the piece in the TwitchCon Gallery, Doc ended up doing interviews in front of it. My painting was in the background of a lot of press, with credit given to me.
Kinda dope, I think.
This piece became about more than streaming. It became about character, branding, performance, timing, and building something so strong that people recognize it instantly.
Dr. Disrespect is different. And I like that.
