Behind The Art: Batman

Darkness, red light, pressure, presence, and comic book atmosphere.

Batman was one of those characters I connected to early.

Before I understood fine art, galleries, murals, or commissions, I understood comics. I understood bold lines, strong shadows, dramatic poses, and characters that looked larger than life on the page.

Batman always had that energy.

But for this piece, I wanted to do something different. I know red versions of Batman have existed before in different ways, but I personally had never really seen Batman the way I pictured him in my head.

So I created one.

I wanted it to feel like he was coming out of nowhere. Almost like you are standing in a pitch-black alley, then all of a sudden — poof — he is right there under a red light.

That was the mood I was going for.

Darkness, surprise, pressure, and presence.

As a kid, tracing comic book characters helped teach me shape, movement, contrast, and emotion. Those early drawings were part of my foundation before I even knew they were training me.

This painting is about more than the suit or the symbol. It is about atmosphere. It is about taking a character everybody knows and showing him through my own eye.

Batman reminds people that darkness does not have to be the end of the story.

Sometimes it becomes the place where something powerful appears.
