Behind The Art: 1911

History, design, weight, contrast, and an object with its own story.

The 1911 is as American as apple pie.

I painted it because I like history, design, guns, and the story behind certain objects. Some things have a shape that people recognize instantly, and the 1911 is one of them.

Its history and service to America are part of the record. But for me, this painting was not about making a political statement. It was about the look, the weight, the design, and the challenge of painting something with that kind of presence.

I used my own hand as the reference, so that made the piece personal. It was not just a random image. It was my hand holding the object, which brought my own connection into the painting.

I wanted the hand, the metal, the shadows, and the darker colors to have real depth. I wanted the piece to feel heavy, clean, and direct.

Then I put it against that bright light blue background to make the whole image pop. That contrast is what makes the darker tones jump forward. The hand, the metal, and the shadows all hit harder because the background gives them room to stand out.

That is what I liked about the painting. It has weight, but it also has clean energy. It feels bold without needing too much around it.

Some paintings start with a deep emotional story. Some start because the object itself already carries one.
